EC warns of action for the breach of election code

PM Oli violates the election code of conduct

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has warned of taking action against the violation ‘silence period’ of the election code in the National Assembly by-election to take place Thursday.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, EC has stated that it came to the notice of the commission that  even after the start of the silence period for the by-elections on Thursday, a series of statement and press releases have been issued violating the election code.

Claiming that such activities have drawn its serious attention, the EC has warned to take action.

On Wednesday alone, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had issued an appeal seeking votes in favor of the party’s candidate Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal. PM Oli’s action has been criticized by public as an attempt to establish himself above the law.

The Commission has said that such activities against the code of conduct would be detrimental to the cleanliness and credibility of the election as the code of conduct to be followed by political parties, public bodies and the media has already come into effect.

The statement issued by EC spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha has said that the commission would also keep a record of those who acted against the code of conduct.
