President Bhandari issues ordinance on political parties

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has issued an ordinance to amend the Political Parties Act 2017 on Wednesday.

According to Dr. Bhesh Raj Adhikari, Personal Secretary to the President, she ratified the ordinance at 1:10 pm on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers in accordance with Article 114 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal.

The ordinance, recommended by Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, makes it easier for political parties to split.

The Political Parties Act Amendment Ordinance provides that the party can be divided if 20 percent of the central committee members or the parliamentary party members opted so.

Earlier, former Prime Minister KP Oli had tried to bring similar ordinance in April 2020. Nepali Congress and other political parties of the ruling alliance had objected to the ordinance then.

Prior to this amendment, the party could be split only after reaching at least 40 percent members.
