Province 1 Chief Minister warns province assembly can be dissolved

BIRATNAGAR: Chief Minister of Province 1 Sherdhan Rai has said that the province assembly could be dissolved. “I am not in favor of that, the attitude of Prachanda-Nepal faction could lead to the dissolution of the assembly.”

He said, “I have recommended convening the assembly in the morning knowing that a motion of no-confidence is being registered. If that was the case, I would have recommended dissolution before the motion was registered. But I am not in favor of the dissolution.”

With the dissolution of the House of Representatives, the Prachanda-Nepal faction of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had filed a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Rai, who was on Oli’s side. Chief Minister Rai had then said he would face a no-confidence motion.

Of the 37 members of the state assembly who signed the no-confidence motion, five have withdrawn their signatures. But Rai does not have enough votes to save his government. The next meeting of the assembly has been called on February 21.

Earlier on Thursday, Oli’s party leaders met with leaders of the Prachanda-Nepal faction and asked them to withdraw the no-confidence motion or wait for the Election Commission’s decision on the party’s authenticity dispute.

But the Prachanda-Nepal faction rejected the Oli faction’s proposal.

However, Chief Minister Rai said that there should be an agreement for holding the meeting on February 21.
