KATHMANDU: Major political parties have agreed to move forward the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) bill in the parliament.
The political parties reached this agreement at an all-party meeting called by Prime Minister KP Oli Saturday.
After the meeting, Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali informed that all parliamentary parties forged consensus to table the MCC in the parliament. The meeting also focused the prevention and control of coronavirus and holding by-elections in the vacant constituencies, according to Gyawali.
At the all-party meeting held in PM’s official residence in Baluwatar, PM oli sought suggestions from all the parties on how to move ahead as the Speaker had blocked several bills, including the MCC.
Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba said the country should move ahead by passing MCC and other crucial bills. Other parties also agreed.
NC senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel said they advised the PM to hold talks with Business Advisory Committee of the parliament in order to further the bills stuck in the House.
Rastra Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader Prakash Chandra Lohani said the PM accused the Speaker of unethical conduct in the parliament by holding hostage several crucial bills, including MCC. “The parliament barred the government from executing its day-to-day development activities. It did not do what it was supposed to do,” Lohani quoted PM Oli as saying.
Nepali Congress Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi, General Secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka, Parliamentary Party Chief Whip Bal Krishna Khand were present in the meeting.
Similarly, from the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Central Council Chairman Mahantha Thakur, leader Laxman Lal Karna attended the meeting. Nepal Workers and Peasant Party (NWPP) lawmaker Prem Suwal also took part in the meeting.
However, JSP Federal Council Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Chairman Upendra Yadav, CPN-UML’s senior leader Madhav Nepal, Jhala Nath Khanal and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda did not turn up in the meeting.
DPM Ishwar Pokharel, Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel and former Speaker Subas Nembang of the ruling UML were present on the occasion.
