KATHMANDU: Two outstanding policemen of Nepal have received the ‘Asia Environmental Enforcement Award’ amidst a program on Wednesday. Those receiving the award are Inspector Sudarshan Panthi and ASI Birendra Singh Johari working under Crime Division (Environment and Wildlife Crime-Pillar 4), Central Investigation Bureau.

Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Sahakul Bahadur Thapa handed over the award amidst a program organized at Central Investigation Bureau. The award was announced under UN Environment Program virtually last month in recognition to the policemen’s contribution to control interstate crimes on environment.

On the occasion, DIG Thapa congratulated the policemen and said the award has boosted their morale and elevated Nepal Police’s image in the international arena.

They were successful to arrest a notorious wildlife criminal Kunjok Chhiring Tamang aka Kunjok Lama, 50, hailing from Humla, from Bauddha, Kathmandu, on June 25, 2020. With the arrest, the police had handed over Tamang to the Langtang National Park, Rasuwa.

Tamang was facing a legal case filed at the Rasuwa district and absconding since September 1, 2005, for his involvement in poaching and possessing huge amount of body parts of Bengal tiger, leopard and other wildlife. He was the mastermind behind the crime.

Earlier, the Bureau had got the same award in 2018 too.
