North Korean leader Kim’s wife makes first appearance in a year

SEOUL: The wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made her first public appearance for the first time in over a year, BBC has reported citing the state media.

According to the report, Ri Sol-ju joined Kim at a concert on Tuesday to mark the birthday of Kim Jong-il, Kim’s late father.

Ri has often accompanied Kim to major events in the past. However, she had not been seen since January last year, the report said.

Ri’s absence stoked speculation over her health or potential pregnancy, BBC said.

National Intelligence Service of South Korea had reportedly told the congressmen that Ri was avoiding appearing in public due to concerns over coronavirus and may have been spending time with her children.

Kim and Ri had entered the Mansudae Art Theatre together to “thunderous cheers”.

Photos showed them laughing – as well as a conspicuous lack of masks or social distancing measures.
