NC holding office-bearers’ meeting today

To dwell on 14th Gen Convention

KATHMANDU: Ruling Nepali Congress (NC) is holding an office-bearers’ meeting today.

According to an NC source, the meeting will start a little later even though it is scheduled for 2 pm.

To be participated by office-bearers and former office-bearers, the meeting will mainly focus on preparations for the 14th General Convention which is fast-approaching, said party chief secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel.

The meeting is likely to take place at Baluwatar since Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is also the Prime Minister, is moving to his official residence in Baluwatar this morning.

Earlier on Thursday, leaders close to senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel were engaged in a discussion at the residence of General Secretary Shashank Koirala on Thursday to chalk out a strategy after President Deuba called a meeting of office-bearers.

The Poudel faction has concluded that the general convention should be held on September 1-4 as per the pre-determined date. Poudel’s side is adamant that it should not be postponed.

According to a central member who participated in the meeting, if the general convention is postponed now, there will be a constitutional crisis in the party. He stressed that the general convention should be held on time as disputes over active members have been resolved in most all of the constituencies.

NC ward convention is scheduled for July 27. Prior to that, Deuba has to submit the final list to the Central Election Committee by sorting out the active membership row.

Discussions are also underway within the Nepali Congress on the option of holding the convention from the active members during the 13th General Convention in the disputed places.

The Deuba faction had an internal discussion about making some changes in the schedule of the lower level convention.
