Nepali mountaineers scale K2 in record first winter ascent

KATHMANDU: Nepali mountaineers have created a history of summiting Mount K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, in winter.

According to Seven Summit Treks, Nepali climbers reached the summit of the 8,611-meter high mountain located in Pakistan at 5 pm local time.

Mountaineers Nirmal Purja, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma G Sherpa, Sona Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa and Dawa Tenjing Sherpa made it to the summit.

“A very special moment. The whole team waited for 10m below the summit to form a group then stepped onto the summit together whilst singing our Nepali National Anthem. We are proud to have been a part of history for humankind and to show that collaboration, teamwork, and a positive mental attitude can push limits to what we feel might be possible,” Purja said in a Facebook post.
