14 Rohingya refugees arriving Kathmandu via land route handed over to Immigration Department

KATHMANDU: Police have handed over 14 Rohingya refugees, who arrived in Kathmandu via land route from Bangladesh, to the Immigration Department.

SSP Ashok Singh, Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range said the Rohingyas arrived a few days ago and were taken under police custody. They were handed over to the Immigration Department on Monday. “Some new Rohingyas arrived. We had the data of previous ones. Therefore, we handed them to the immigration,” Singh said.

Director General of the Immigration Department Narayan Prasad Bhattarai confirmed the refugees came in contact via the police. “Their arrival is being investigated. Much can’t be said at the moment as investigation is underway. We can’t say now if they arrived here legally or illegally.”

Neither the police nor the department revealed where they had been kept in the capital.
