KATHMANDU: A group of former vice-chancellors has called for non-interference in the autonomy of the Medical Education Commission (MEC).
In a joint statement issued Tuesday, 12 former vice-chancellors, including Mahesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Kedar Bhakta Mathema and Suresh Raj Sharma, protested the influence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is also the Chancellor, and Education Minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha, also Pro-Chancellor, to facilitate affiliation to B&C Medical College.
PM Oli and Minister Shrestha last Friday called on MEC Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shrikrishna Giri to Baluwatar to pressure him for facilitating affiliation to B&C.
The former vice-chancellors said it was unfortunate that the rule of law was being sidelined in bid to give affiliation to B&C.
Stating Dr.Giri, who took a just stand, was being threatened, they said, “The government will be responsible for any damage caused to anyone who faces physical, mental and physical torture as a challenge to honesty and morality.”
Former vice-chancellors also demanded that security be provided to Dr. Giri and urged him not to give in the MEC’s autonomy under pressure.
