Weekend curfew in Delhi to contain spread of coronavirus



NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has decided to enforce a weekend curfew to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Indian Today has reported.

Chief Minister Kejriwal said that the curfew will come into effect from April 17 onwards.

The curfew will be enforced from 10 pm on Friday evening till 6 am Monday, he added.

According to him, people step out of their homes on weekdays for work and on weekends for recreational purposes which can be curtailed.

On Wednesday, Delhi recorded as many as 17,282 new coronavirus cases along with 104 more virus-related deaths.

According to CM Kejriwal, only essential services will be exempted from the weekend curfew.

Likewise, the interstate transport will continue, he said adding that people going to hospitals, airports and stations will be exempted from the weekend curfew.

According to him, the Delhi government will issue curfew passes to wedding guests.

However, markets, spas, malls, swimming pools and gyms will remain shut during the weekend curfew.

Similarly, auditoriums will remain closed while cinema halls will be permitted to operate at 30 per cent of seating capacity during the curfew.

Dine-in restaurants will remain closed throughout the weekend.
