NC leader Thapa appeals delegates to vote for Dr. Koirala in second phase of polling

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Gagan Kumar Thapa has appealed to vote for presidential candidate Dr. Shekhar Koirala in the 14th general convention of the party.

Issuing a statement on Tuesday, Thapa called on NC delegates to cast votes for Koirala in the second round of voting being held this afternoon. The re-vote took place after none of the five candidates were able to secure minimum of 50 percent votes.

Meanwhile, other two candidates vying for NC presidency Prakash Man Singh and Bimalendra Nidhi have extended support to incumbent party President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Hence, only Dr. Koirala and Deuba are in the fray in the second phase of voting.

In this context, Thapa, who is contesting for the post of General Secretary from the panel of Dr. Koirala, sought votes for his panel.

He said, “Delegates, you should make wise decision by giving your invaluable votes to Dr Koirala to ensure transformation of the party. Make the decision after listening to your heart, remembering the sacrifices of our forefathers and thinking about the dreams of future generations.”

He said entering the second phase of election for leadership meant disapproval of the existing leadership. “This aspiration should be reflected in votes you cast. This is a momentous decision in the political life of the NC. At this juncture, history is urging us to make the same extraordinary decisions,” he said, adding, “A mistake committed now would have long lasting impact on younger generations of the party.”
