MCA-Nepal objects to misleading content being spread thru social media, warns public against misinformation



KATHMANDU: Millennium Challenge Account Nepal Development Board (MCA-Nepal) has said its serious attention was drawn to the exaggerated and false information concerning it being spread on social media and warned the public to be alert of such misinformation.

Issuing a press statement Monday, MCA-Nepal clarified that the misleading content concerning it, being updated and further circulated on social media, are completely fictitious and did not contain a shred of truth.

Condemning the trend of spreading counterfeit information among the public by misusing social media, MCA-Nepal urged the public to be aware of such bogus contents contributing to information pollution on social media sphere.

The statement reads, “A material was transmitted on Twitter on September 9 using the fake signature of Khadga Bahadur Bista, Executive Director of MCA-Nepal Development Board. The fabricated content suggested a virtual meeting between MCA-Nepal, MCC and US embassy officials to launch a campaign for MCC Compact approval.” It added that false claims that some newspapers and TVs should be mobilized were included in the same material and the emblem of the Government of Nepal, MCA-Nepal and MCC were also misused in the material.

The statement added fake documents started appearing on social media a day before the MCC headquarters submitted its clarifications on some of the questions raised by the Government of Nepal. “Even though MCA-Nepal condemned the false document through its social media page, it has been found that the misleading materials are being updated and in circulation on social media.”

MCA-Nepal further clarified that it never used such letterhead as presented in the counterfeit material and that the signature of the Executive Director Bista in the document was a digitally copied signature.

MCA-Nepal said it initiated measures to take legal action against the persons involved in circulating such fabricated content and was corresponding with the Cyber ​​Bureau of Nepal Police in this regard.

MCA-Nepal made a heartfelt request to the esteemed public to be aware of such information pollution.
