DoT bans taking pictures and circulating them on the internet

KATHMANDU: Nepal has banned taking pictures of climbers and circulating them on the internet without their consent.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) said that the expedition team will not be allowed to take photos or record videos of other climbers other than those of their own expedition team members.

A notice issued by the DoT said taking pictures and filming videos of climbers from other teams and publishing them on the internet will not be allowed from this season.

The DoT took this decision in the wake of a photo showing a long queue of climbers summiting the Mt Everest that went viral in 2019.

Climber Nirmal Purja had shared the photo, which went viral on the internet drawing criticisms against Nepal’s authorities for not ensuring proper arrangement for climbing Sagarmatha.
