Science, technology to resolve problems: NAST VC Shrestha

KATHMANDU: Vice Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Dr Sunil Babu Shrestha, expressed the hope that science and technology would become a medium to resolve problems facing society. The country would achieve prosperity when youths are mobilized through science and technology, he viewed.

He said it during a national conference on ‘youths on science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship’ that kicked off in the federal capital Kathmandu Sunday.

On the occasion, Tribhuvan University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Dharmakant Bastola admitted that Nepal’s education was weak in research and innovation. So, the government needs to augment budget for higher education. If higher education is linked to research and innovation, youths could be made self-entrepreneurs, he added.

Similarly, Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University, Dr Bhola Thapa, stressed the need for translating skills gained from science into entrepreneurship.

Secretary at Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ram Prasad Thapaliya, however, informed that the government was launching programs to attract youths towards science and technology.

Researchers will present working papers on science, technology, education and health in the conference, it has been informed. Around 400 young scientists have taken part in the conference that will get on until Monday. RSS
