KATHMANDU: The Oli-led government has fallen into the status of a coalition with the CPN (Maoist Center) following the Supreme Court’s verdict.
Both the parties have expedited talks with the other parties in the parliament to forge an alliance for the formation of a new government after the erstwhile CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) were restored by the Supreme Court’s verdict, scrapping their unification as the Nepal Communist Party (NCP).
Currently, CPN-UML has 120 lawmakers, and it can form a simple majority government in an alliance with the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP)
According to sources, Prime Minister KP Oli is in a mood to form the government in an alliance with the JSP even by splitting it in case the entire party does not agree to join his incumbent government. Oli has already held talks with the top-notch JSP leaders to this effect.
Currently, JSP has 32 lawmakers. “The required number to form a new government is 18, all the JSP leaders are not required,” said a source close to the Prime Minister, adding, “We have held talks the JSP leaders to this effect.”
JSP has floated its proposals including the release of its lawmaker Ramesh Chaudhary, withdrawal of cases filed against its leaders and cadres during the Tharuhat and Madhes Movement and amendment to the Constitution before forming an alliance with the CPN-UML.
According to sources, JSP leaders Laxman Lal Karna and Sarbendra Nath Shukla floated these proposals in a meeting with Prime Minister Oli held on Tuesday.
Similarly, CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda has proposed the Nepali Congress and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) to form a three-party coalition government.
Prachanda on Tuesday held discussions with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Chairman of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai on the possibility of forming a coalition government.
In response, NC President Deuba said that he would take the decision after consulting with the party leaders.
Likewise, Chairman Prachanda also met with Dr Bhattarai with the same proposal of forming a coalition government sans the CPN-UML.
