KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Constitutional Council has been held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar Sunday morning.
Prime Minister Oli convened the CC meeting after issuing a controversial ordinance for the second time on Friday.
However, Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Speaker Agni Sapkota did not participate in the meeting.
NC President Deuba had on Saturday said he would not participate in the meeting.
Claiming that the government’s latest amendment of the Constitutional Council Act has paralyzed the spirit of the constitutional body, the main opposition leader Deuba had also urged other members of the council not to attend the meeting.
NC chief had also accused the government of undermining the functions of the parliament.
The meeting has been participated by PM Oli, Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, and Chairman of the National Assembly Ganesh Timsina.
Likewise, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sapkota, too, said he would boycott the meeting called by PM Oli.
Earlier, PM Oli had introduced a controversial ordinance relating to the formation of CC and had appointed various officials in the constitutional bodies as per the provisions introduced through the ordinance.
The ordinances introduced before have not gone through the mandatory ratification from the parliament.
However, the government has introduced eight more ordinances so as to validate previous ordinances.
Among the constitutional bodies, the Public Service Commission is completely vacant while the Inclusive Commission and the Election Commission also have many vacancies.
