Govt grants public holiday on Sonam Lhosar

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to grant a public holiday on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar festival which falls on February 12 this year.

The Oli-led government had cut off the public holiday on Lhosar festival three years ago.

The public holiday had been given since 2051 BS on Lhosar festival which is celebrated by Tamang and Hyolmo communities residing in the Himalayan region.

A cabinet meeting held yesterday decided to resume the public holiday at the request of Nepal Tamang Ghedung, the community-based organization of Tamang people, said Minister for Youth and Sports Dawa Tamang.

Tamang community is celebrating 2057th Sonam Lhosar this year. In Tamang language, Lho means new and Sar means year, or when combined, New Year.

Unlike the previous years, Sonam Lhosar will be celebrated virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic this year, said Acting Chairman of Nepal Tamang Ghedung Kumar Ghising.
