KATHMANDU: The then CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) have gone to the pre-unification stage following the Supreme Court (SC)’s verdict to annul the unification between the two communist parties.
Two parties had formed an alliance in the general elections held in 2017.
Even though the alliance was formed targeting the general elections, they had fielded their candidates separately. The elections had been held in December 2017 for the 275 seats of the House of Representatives.
The then CPN-UML had won a total of 121 seats – 80 seats through the first-past-the-post electoral system and 41 through the proportional representation system.
Similarly, CPN (Maoist Center) had won 53 seats – 36 through the first-past-the-post electoral system and 17 through the proportional representation system.
The two communist parties had forged unification on May 17, 2018.
Likewise, Nepali Congress had won 63 seats – 23 through the first-past-the-post system and 40 through the proportional representation system.
The UPN-UML is the largest party followed by Nepali Congress while CPN (Maoist Center) is in the third position.
Likewise, CPN-UML has 27 seats in the National Assembly, NC has 13 and Maoist Center has 12.
