KATHMANDU: With the Supreme Court (SC) giving its verdict in favor of Rishi Kattel’s Nepal Communist Party (NCP), and annulment of the unification of the erstwhile CPN-UML and the Maoist (Center), only four parties have come into existence in the Parliament.
It should be noted that the SC has revoked the unification of the Nepal Communist Party by reviving the erstwhile CPN-UML and the Maoist (Center).
Now with the latest development, the HoR has only four parties – the CPN (UML), Nepali Congress, Maoist (Center) and the Janata Samajwadi Party.
While the erstwhile UML had 121 seats in the House of Representatives winning 80 seats in the direct election and 41 seats under the proportional representation. The UML has only 120 lawmakers as the then UML’s Sanu Shiva has passed away.
Likewise, the NC had won 63 seats in the HoR –23 seats directly elected and 40 under the proportional representation.
The party’s Bijay Kumar Gachhadar has been suspended in a corruption case while another lawmaker Mohammad Aftaf Alam is in jail.
Similarly, the CPN-Maoist (Center) had won 53 seats in the election. It has 36 direct-elected and 17 under the proportional representation.
With the unification of the Janata Samajwadi Party, it has currently 34 lawmakers.
Prior to the party’s unification, there were 17 lawmakers from the Rastriya Janata Party and 17 from the Samajwadi Party Nepal.
Hari Narayan Rauniyar of Janata Samajwadi has been suspended on corruption charges while Resham Chaudhary is in jail.
The Rastriya Jana Morcha, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Nepal Workers and Peasants Party have one each lawmaker.
The HoR has only one independent lawmaker.
