PM Oli seeks NC support, Deuba rejects

NC, as the main opposition, cannot vote in favor of PM: NC President Deuba

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has turned down Prime Minister KP Oli’s request to support him in the vote of confidence that he is taking on May 10.

PM Oli along with some of the ruling CPN-UML leaders had reached Deuba’s residence in Budhanilakantha to seek NC’s support in the parliament.

Nepali Congress leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said that PM Oli had urged Deuba to support him to get the vote of confidence in the special session of the parliament on May 10.

In response, NC President Deuba said that the party, being the main opposition, was not in a position to give a vote of confidence.

Prime Minister Oli held around one-hour-long talks with Deuba at a time when he has decided to take a vote of confidence in the parliament on May 10.

Deputy Prime Minister and UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel, Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Subash Nemwang, and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa “Badal” had accompanied PM Oli.

The meeting was seen as significant at a time when the ruling UML has decided to field Ram Bahadur Thapa in the by-election to the vacant National Assembly member from Bagmati Pradesh scheduled for May 20.

It should be noted that the NC party has also intensified talks with other political parties, including the CPN Maoist Center, Upendra Yadav faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party, and Madhav Nepal faction of the UML to prevent the Prime Minister from getting a vote of confidence.

Meanwhile, the NC along with the CPN (Maoist Center), Madhav Nepal faction of the UML, and Upendra Yadav faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party has already decided to field Maoist leader Khim Lal Devkota as their common candidate to the NA.
