Uighur camps: US, UK govts condemn reports of systematic rape

WASHINGTON: The US has said it is “deeply disturbed” by a BBC report describing allegations of systematic rape of Uighur women in Chinese camps.

“These atrocities shock the conscience and must be met with serious consequences,” BBC has quoted a spokesperson.

Likewise, government minister Nigel Adams said in the UK parliament that the report showed “clearly evil acts”, BBC has reported.

More than a million Uighurs and other minorities are estimated to have been detained in camps in China, the report said.

BBC had on Wednesday published an investigation by the contained first-hand testimony of systematic rape, sexual abuse and torture of women detainees by police and guards.

China’s foreign ministry has, however, denied the allegations, accusing it a “false report”, according to BBC.

The testimony obtained by BBC detailed allegations of rape and sexual abuse of Uighur women detained in China’s internment camps in the Xinjiang region, according to the BBC news report.

According to the report, women were removed from their cells “every night” and raped by one or more masked Chinese men.

Likewise, a Kazakh woman from Xinjiang — detained for 18 months in the camp system — said she was forced to strip Uighur women naked and handcuff them, before leaving them alone with Chinese men, BBC said.
