SC issues show-cause notice against Cabinet expansion

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a show-cause notice in a writ filed against the expansion of Council of Ministers by Prime Minister KP Oli after the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

A single bench of Justice Anil Sinha on Monday issued a show-cause order responding to the writ filed by senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi.

The apex court has ordered to summon both defendants and plaintiff on January 12 to discuss whether to issue an interim order or not, Tripathi told Khabarhub.

Tripathi had moved the apex court demanding to bar the newly-appointed ministers from carrying out their duties immediately arguing that the Prime Minister has turned caretaker after House dissolution.

Stating that the caretaker government can only run the daily work of the country as per the global norms, the petition states that the government cannot make new appointments and reshuffle the Council of Ministers.

He has demanded annulling the decision to induct new ministers and reshuffle portfolios of incumbent ministers.

Prime Minister Oli on December 25 had inducted eight new ministers and one state minister into the Cabinet and also reshuffled the ministries of incumbent ministers.
