Fertilizer import from Bangladesh delays



KATHMANDU: There has been a delay to import fertilizers the Nepal government has purchased from Bangladesh.

It has been 18 days since an agreement between the governments of Nepal and Bangladesh for Nepal to purchase 50,000 metric tonnes fertilizers was reached.

In this regard, Nepal has already sent a letter of credit (LC) to the government of Bangladesh. There has been a delay from the side of Bangladesh in supplying fertilisers although Nepal has completed all the process in this regard, said the Agriculture Inputs Company Ltd.

The Company has sent a draft of the opening of LC in Siddhartha Bank to Bangladesh, said Managing Director of the Company, Netra Bahadur Bhandari.

“We have received information that Bangladeshi officials have been studying the LC sent by us. The process to supply fertilizers will begin once Bangladesh approves the LC and nods. There has been a delay from the side of Bangladesh,” he said.

As per the agreement, the supply should begin within 10 days of the issuance of LC and complete within two months.

The government of Nepal is importing 50,000 metric tonnes of fertilizers from Bangladesh. The supply cost is USD 259.195 per metric ton, which is an around USD 18 cheaper per metric ton as compared to the existing supply rate.
