KATHMANDU: A serious fault on Nepal Army’s intelligence and the Military Court has resulted in the more than two and half year’s imprisonment of two soldiers.
A military court that had convicted soldiers Lab Kumar Gurung and Saroj Tamang on allegation of the theft of a submachine gun (SMG) acquitted them on Friday.
According to sources, Gurung and Tamang had been passing their time in Chitwan jail.
A military court had convicted Gurung and Tamang on April 8, 2019 and sentenced them to 10 years and seven years in prison respectively.
They were accused of stealing an SMG from the Kali Bahadur Gan of NA on December 17, 2018.
Unfortunately, even the family of the accused had also been jailed on the charge.
However, the incident of stealth had taken a twist after another soldier, Gangadhar Dhakal, who was arrested in Bharatpur, Chitwan on charges of murdering fellow soldier Bharat Gurung, was found to have stolen the SMG.
Dhakal had killed Gurung by the same SMG.
The Nepal Army had been sharply criticized after it was revealed that the recovered weapon was a lost weapon from the Kali Bahadur Gana about three years ago.
Although both Gurung and Tamang had appealed against the decision of the military court in April 2019, there writ passed unheard.
