KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has said that he was forced to dissolve the House of Representatives (HoR) due to what he said “continued non-cooperation” from all sides, including his party in running the government.

In a written response submitted to the Supreme Court on Sunday, PM Oli said he dissolved the House owing to unnecessary interference and pressure from the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), sources have claimed.

Prime Minister Oli said that the dissolution of the House as the result of the two-year-long impasse as he thought that the HoR failed to function as per the wishes of the people.

“I did not see the possibility of the NCP-led government working as per its election manifesto,” the Prime Minister said adding that the country would be caught in a quagmire for another two years due to the infighting in the NCP.

“Since such wrangling would not allow the government and the HoR to function as per the people’s aspirations, going to the people for the fresh mandate was the only way out,” PM Oli has said in the letter.

Prime Minister Oli also said, in his response, that as the leader of the party, the parliament and the government, his main duty was to maintain party discipline in the party, the parliament as well as in the government.

“Dissolving the parliament is an established parliamentary practice to maintain discipline in the party,” he has said/

“I did not want to stick to power by compromising people’s aspirations,” he has said in the letter sent to the SC adding that some interest groups were putting constant unnecessary pressure from within the party.

Stating that the dissolution of the parliament was a product of “compelling circumstances”, Prime Minister Oli has claimed that the decision to dissolve the House was basically taken due to the lack of cooperation from the parliamentary parties and the committees to the government.
