SC reinstates four elected representatives of Kailali

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the reinstatement of four people’s representatives, including Chhaya Devi Devkota, deputy mayor of Bhajani Municipality, Kailali.

A single bench of Justice Kumar Chundal has issued an interim order not to immediately implement the decision of the Election Commission (EC) to dismiss them at the request of the Maoist Center.

The SC reinstated Deputy Mayor Devkota, Spokesperson for Godavari Municipality and Ward-1 Chairman Sharma Nanda Bhatt, Ward Chairman of Gauriganga Municipality-4 Bhagirathi Bist and Ward Chairman of Bardagoria Village Municipality-4 Puran BC. All of them joined the UML after the split of the erstwhile Nepal Communist Party (NCP). However, they had contested the elections from Maoist Center.

The SC order said the decision of the EC should not be implemented until the issue is resolved as the directly elected representatives are the heads of the local executive and their absence will cause irreparable damage to the local levels’ functioning.
