Maoist Center not to withdraw support to govt immediately

KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Center) has said it would not immediately withdraw its support to the Prime Minister KP Oli-led government.

A meeting of the party held at its party office in Paris Danda Thursday has, however, demanded the resignation of PM Oli.

Party Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that the meeting discussed whether or not it should withdraw its support to the government.

Shrestha said that the next meeting to be held soon will decide the party’s formal position adding that they failed to make a decision as the Nepali Congress (NC) and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) are yet to make clear their positions.

The meeting also asked the NC and JSP to make their stance clear whether they want to join the Oli-led government or form a new one.

“In fact, we are not supporting this government,” Shrestha said adding, “But we want the NC and JSP to make their positions clear.”

The Maoist Center is under moral pressure to withdraw its support to the incumbent government after the Supreme Court restored the erstwhile CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) scrapping their unification as the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) on March 7.

Expressing his views at the special hour of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Maoist Center’s Chief Whip Dev Prasad Gurung argued that the incumbent government would be invalid if it did not take a vote of confidence by April 5.

Gurung reminded that getting a vote of confidence by April 5 is mandatory for the government as the erstwhile ruling Nepal Communist Party was annulled after the Supreme Court (SC) verdict of March 7.
