KATHMANDU: There have been 34 international charted flights from Nepal since the country went into the lockdown.

The Nepal government enforced lockdown since March 24 to stem Coronavirus pandemic that has wreaked havoc across the world.

Foreign countries had conducted international charted flights to rescue their citizens stranded in Nepal without prior information.

According to Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), a total of 4, 532 foreigners have left Nepal for their respective countries in the period between March 24 to April 23.

They had been stranded in Nepal after the government banned international flights. Some of those who left Nepal include Nepalis, too, according to Raj Kumar Chhetri, spokesperson of the CAAN.

“Green card holders Nepalis  have left for Australia and America during the period,” said Chhetri.

In normal condition, CAAN itself grants the permit but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does it during a special condition including lockdown.

The permission order comes to the CAAN via the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation.

A total of nine airlines companies including national flag carrier Nepal Airlines conducted charted flights from Nepal. Others include Titan Airways, Malindo Air, Shree Airlines, Sudan Airways, Buddha Air, Druk Air and Himalayan Airlines among others.

Qatar Airways has conducted the highest nine flights followed by Nepal Airlines with five. Nepal Airlines conducted flights to China to bring medical goods.
