35 jailbirds found coronavirus positive on Sunday



KATHMANDU: The country’s biggest jail, also known as Jagannath Dewal or Central Jail, has witnessed coronavirus pandemic in 35 jailbirds on Sunday.

According to Jailer Laxmi Prasad Baskota, the jail reported coronavirus pandemic in 60 persons including 35 prisoners and 25 security personnel in the last 24 hours.

He informed that one jail staffer has also tested coronavirus positive and the report of others is still to come.

The jail has more than 3,200 national and international jailbirds including the ‘bikini killer’ Charles Shovraj and more than 200 of them are suffering from chronic diseases like paralysis, kidney problems, heart diseases etc.

Baskota clarified that the reason behind the high number of sick prisoners in this jail is the hospital.

“Unlike other jails, it has a big hospital for the jailbirds;” jailer Baskota informed, adding, “Hence, the prisoners with health hazards are shifted here.”
