L’Oreal to remove ‘whitening’ from products

PARIS: French cosmetics giant L’Oreal said it was removing words such as “whitening” from its products.

The decision to this effect has been made following widespread global anti-racism protests.

According to the company, it will remove words such as white/whitening, light/lightening and fair/fairness from all its skin products.

It should be noted that the Indian and Bangladeshi arms of Unilever has already decided to rename their locally marketed ‘Fair & Lovely’ skin-lightening cream for the same reason.

Several companies were criticized for skin-lightening products after the rise of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement after the killing in an African-American George Floyd last month in the US.

Meanwhile, the Johnson & Johnson has said it would also stop selling Neutrogena and Clean & Clear products, which have been advertised as dark-spot reducers.
