Govt tightens noose on rescue of stranded people

KATHMANDU: The government has put a ban on the rescue and  transportation of the people stranded in various places across the country initiated by the local governments of late.

Many people have been stranded in various cities including the Kathmandu Valley due to the lockdown.

“The government put a ban on transportation of the people to stem Coronavirus spread for the time being,” Umakanta Chaudhary, spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has dispatched a circulation to all the 77 district administration offices directing the latter to put a ban on the movement of vehicles except for essential ones.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has ordered the district administration officers not to issue passes to people at random.

Local governments had been rescuing people from Kathmandu to their respective districts that resulted in a huge crowd at Koteshwor and Kalanki junctions.

Police stopped seven vehicles coming to Kathmandu from Biratnagar at Nagdhunga this morning.

Forty-two out of 160 people sent by Biratnagar Metropolitan City were halted at Nagdhunga.

Later they were allowed to enter Kathmandu by checking their temperature.

The COVID-19 Crisis Management Center (CCMC) has informed that about 82 thousand 650 security personnel have been mobilized to enforce and manage the lockdown.

A cabinet meeting on Sunday decided to extend the ongoing nationwide lockdown until May 7 to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
