KATHMANDU: Main opposition Nepali Congress has registered an amendment proposal to the Special Service Bill seeking court’s approval prior to phone tapping.
As many as 22 lawmakers including Gagan Thapa on Friday registered the amendment proposal to the Special Service Bill.
Earlier, the parliamentary Legislation Committee had decided to formulate a law that would pave the way for the National Investigation Department (NID) to tap phones without court’s approval.
The government had, a few months ago, registered the Special Service Bill that included the provision that investigation officers can tap the phone conversation.
Nepali Congress, the main opposition in the parliament, had objected to the provision arguing that it would infringe upon the people’s privacy.
On March 18, the meeting of the Committee approved the provision.
