CHITWAN: The swollen Narayani River swept away a three-year-old rhino from Chitwan National Park on Friday morning.
The river swept away the rhino calf from Bhelauji, the border point of Madhyabindu Municipality and Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-East of Susta), Information Officer of the National Park Lokendra Adhikari said.
The river swept away the calf from the core area of the National Park, he said, adding that “We failed to save the calf despite our attempts.”
Adhikari shared that the swollen river has taken the baby rhino to the Indian territory.
He also informed that attempts to search for the calf were ongoing by coordinating with the officials of Valmiki Tiger Reserves of India.
“We have not received any information about the status of the baby rhino so far. We have asked (the officials) to inform us once the calf was recovered,” Adhikari added.
Earlier, a calf swept away by the river was found dead in this rainy season.
Three years ago, some rhinos had reached the Indian land after the flood in the Narayani River.
The National Park officials had brought back a total of 13 rhinos that were swept away in the river then.
