China admits casualties in Galwan clash

BEIJING: China has admitted casualties in Galwan deadly brawl with Indian soldiers in eastern Ladakh on June 15 saying that it did not suffer heavy casualties.

It, however, did not reveal the number of casualties because a comparison could stir up hostility, according to a top Chinese official.

Speaking to a select group of diplomats at the China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, He Xiangqi, deputy director general of boundary and ocean affairs, said that the casualties on the Chinese side were not heavy.

She said that the reason for not revealing the numbers is because China does not want to stir up sentiments.

It did not publicize the exact casualties as Beijing ‘did not want the media to play it up’.

Xiangqi said now was the time for India and China to find ways to de-escalate the situation as well as to restore stability.

The Chinese government official has for the first time acknowledged that the Chinese army suffered casualties.

The Indian army lost 20 soldiers during the June 15 clash.
