TOKYO: Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said his request for the Tokyo Olympics to be postponed for a year has been agreed to by organizers.
Abe held talks with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach on Monday and said a postponement is unavoidable if the 2020 games cannot take place this year due to measures taken to combat COVID-19, NHK television reported.
The IOC has said it will make a decision on the future of the games, which were due to start in June, in the next four weeks.
Abe said Bach agreed “100% to postponing the games for a year.
