PM Oli likely to withdraw controversial ordinances

KATHMANDU: After opposition parties called it ‘untimely and complete nonsense’, Prime Minister KP Oli is likely to withdraw the controversial ordinances approved by the President on Monday.

PM Oli, who also discussed the issue with Nepal Communist Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal this morning, is expected to meet President Bidhya Devi Bhandari ‘anytime soon’. Chairman Dahal is learnt to have suggested PM Oli to withdraw the ordinance to avoid further complications both inside the party and outside.

The amendments on the provisions in the Political Party Act had made it easy to split political parties while another ordinance had made it possible to call a meeting of the Constitutional Council without the main opposition party leader’s presence.

PM Oli has come under fire for what has been dubbed as ‘inappropriate move’ that came in haste. Party senior leader Kumar Nepal, too, is learned to have suggested PM Oli to withdraw the ordinance.

Meanwhile, the ruling NCP is caught in a quagmire after PM Oli brought an ordinance. As many as 20 standing committee members have demanded a meeting of the committee to thrash out the confusion.

They have already sent a letter to Chairmen Oli and Dahal to convene the meeting of the standing committee at the earliest. Meanwhile, PM Oli has postponed today’s scheduled meeting with the party lawmakers saying that he would remain busy with other internal affairs of the party.
