KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has expressed deep concern over recent violent incidents in the Tarai-Madhesh region and demanded an impartial investigation, legal action against those responsible and an all-party dialogue for a long-term solution.
Issuing a statement after a meeting of the party’s Central Working Performance Committee chaired by RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden on Friday, party spokesperson Mohan Kumar Shrestha made the demands.
The party also condemned the mysterious killing of a person involved in the care of Hanuman Temple in Raghunathpur, Dhanusha. It said violence, communal hatred, religious intolerance and social conflict are unacceptable in any civilised society.
The RPP claimed that the death of citizens due to police firing reflected serious administrative weaknesses in crowd management and alleged that tensions in the Tarai-Madhesh region increased due to the state’s failure to exercise restraint and properly assess the situation.
The party said problems in a democratic system should be resolved through dialogue, tolerance, rule of law and mutual respect rather than suppression and the use of force.
It urged the government to carry out an independent and credible investigation into the incidents, take action against those responsible and provide justice to the victims.
The party also expressed concern over repeated tensions and communal disputes in different parts of the Tarai-Madhesh during Hindu festivals and religious events. It called for a detailed study into the causes, background, security lapses and administrative responsibilities behind such incidents.
RPP suggested forming an all-party committee and immediately starting dialogue to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The party said the state must ensure that every Nepali citizen can freely practise their religion, culture and traditions within the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and law.
It also called for a national review of the ideological and constitutional path adopted after the political changes of 2006, claiming that insufficient attention to national identity, cultural continuity and social unity had contributed to recurring social and religious tensions.
Clarifying its position on restoring Nepal as a Hindu state based on Vedic Sanatan traditions, the RPP said the agenda was not aimed at limiting the rights of any religion or community but was based on preserving Nepal’s historical identity, national unity and cultural continuity while ensuring religious freedom and equal rights for all citizens.
Spokesperson Shrestha claimed that developments over the past two decades had demonstrated the need for such a debate and called for a national discussion on the issue.
The party urged citizens to remain calm and stand for tolerance, unity and social harmony, stressing that all sides must act responsibly to maintain long-term peace.
