222 Nepalis stranded at Raxaul

KATHMANDU: The rescue of some 222 Nepalis stranded in Raxaul has become difficult due to the obstruction of Indian Police.

Despite the preparation the District Administration Office, Parsa to evacuate the stranded Nepalis at Raxaul, obstruction from Indian Security forces has confined the Nepalis at the Raxaul-based Hajarimal quarantine.

Indian security forces did not let the Nepalis come out saying they have not got the orders from their senior authorities.

However, Lalit Kumar Basnet, the Assistant Chief District Officer of Parsa claimed that after talking with the Deputy Magistrate of the region both sides had agreed to let their citizens return home as facilitated by the security forces.

“In a talk with the DM of the region, we had made an agreement to let the Indian’s stranded in Birgunj go to India and the Nepalis stranded in Raxaul come to Nepal,” Basnet said, “As per the agreement, we let the Indian’s go but the Indian side has held Nepalis claiming it has not got the order from senior authority.”

He added that he was trying to establish a connection with the DM and the stranded Nepalis would, most probably, be brought to Nepal by Sunday.

According to Basnet, there are some 222 Nepalis of 25 different districts of Nepal, including 42 from Parsa, 23 each from Bara and Western Rukum and rest from Kathmandu, Kailali, Surkhet and Jhapa.

The District Administration Office, Parsa has already set up a quarantine to keep the Nepalis stranded in Raxaul.

“Two persons from Kathmandu will also be kept here, as authorities there have asked us not to send them to the capital,” Basnet said, “We are coordination with the Chief District Officers of other districts to send the rest to their home district for quarantine.”

Meanwhile, around 215 Indians, who were at the Birgunj-based quarantine and their relatives were handed over to the Indian side on Tuesday.cording to Basnet, Indian police has stopped hundreds of Indians heading to India from Nepal as well.
