Gagan Thapa urges restraint after Sunsari incident

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has appealed to all sides to remain calm following the violent incident in Sunsari, urging people to protect social harmony and religious tolerance.

Issuing a video message on Tuesday evening, Thapa questioned why the situation reached a point where security forces had to open fire, resulting in the loss of a person’s life. He said the state must provide answers regarding the incident.

“Why did the situation arise in Sunsari where firing had to be carried out and a life was lost? We have questions for the state. We will continue seeking answers,” Thapa said.

He added that responsibility at this time does not lie only with the government but with everyone in society.

“This is not the time for rumours, provocation, or revenge. This is the time for restraint,” he said, emphasizing that unity in diversity, religious tolerance, social harmony, and brotherhood are the foundations of Nepali society.

Thapa urged all citizens to act with this awareness and called on party leaders and cadres to work towards maintaining peace and harmony in society.

He also warned against actions driven by anger or violence, urging everyone to think seriously during the sensitive situation.

Tensions in Dewanganj of Sunsari escalated after a dispute between two groups turned violent. Authorities have imposed a curfew in the area following the death of a young man who was shot by police on Monday, further intensifying the situation.
