Political parties up the ante against parliament dissolution

KATHMANDU: The disgruntled faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), main opposition Nepali Congress (NC), Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) and Bibeksheel Sajha Party have announced protests programs against the Oli-led  government’s move to dissolve the parliament.

President Bidya Bhandari on Sundy dissolved the parliament and announced the date for the mid-term poll on April 30 and May 10, 2021 at the recommendation of the cabinet meeting.

Prime Minister Oli decided to dissolve the parliament yesterday following the intra-party feud of the NCP that garnered almost two thirds’ majority three years ago.

The protest programs have been underway in various places including the Kathmandu Valley of the country since the parliament was dissolved yesterday.

Meanwhile,  Prime Minister Oli met with the chiefs of security agencies yesterday evening and directed them to maintain high security alert to preempt untoward incidents in the changed context.

Constitutional experts have dubbed the Prime Minister Oli’s move to dissolve the parliament as a ‘Coup to the Constitution’.

They have concluded that the parliament dissolution is unconstitutional, anti-democratic and against the mandate of the people. Meanwhile, a writ petition has also been filed at the Supreme Court against it.
