Committee endorses 7-year-threshold for foreign women to obtain naturalized citizenship

KATHMANDU: The parliamentary State Affairs and Good Governance Committee has endorsed the proposal of a seven-year threshold for a foreign women marrying a Nepali citizen to obtain Nepal’s naturalized citizenship.

A meeting of the Committee Sunday endorsed the proposal earlier floated by the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) saying that a foreign woman marrying a Nepali citizenship will get Nepal’s naturalized citizenship only after seven years.

The parliamentary committee will forward the bill to amend the Citizenship Act to the full House for discussion as the ruling NCP has already decided to endorse the seven-year-period.

The Committee has also proposed granting residence permit to a foreign woman married to a Nepali citizen until she will be eligible to obtain a naturalized citizenship.

Foreign women marrying a Nepali national can, however, exercise social, economic and cultural rights during the seven-year-threshold.

According to the amendment proposal, the woman will be allowed to operate businesses, use or sell fixed and movable assets, or get involved in transaction of properties.

Meanwhile, the main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) and Rastriya Janata Party have registered a notes of dissent on the decision on the amendment bill.
