KATHMANDU: Today is the 10th memorial day of former Prime Minister and late President of Nepali Congress (NC) Girija Prasad Koirala.

Unlike the previous years, Nepali Congress is not organizing any programs this time on the occasion of Koirala’s Memorial Day due to the fear of the coronavirus.

Five-time Prime Minister Koirala had actively served for 60 years in the Nepali politics.

Koirala was born to his father Krishna Prasad Koirala in the Indian State of Bihar in 1925 as his father had been exiled for voicing against the then despotic Rana Regime.

Koirala had started his political career by leading the Biratnagar jute mill strike in his home town in Biratnagar in 2004 BS.

Koirala had played an instrumental role in bringing the then into-decade-insurgency Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) into the mainstream politics through the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Koirala had passed away at the age of 85 on March 20, 2010.
