Punishment-related provision to be dislodged from Media Council Bill

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have agreed to remove provision related to punishment from the proposed Media Council Bill.

Lawmakers of the Legislation Management Committee of the National Assembly forged agreement to this effect during a clause-wise deliberation held on the Bill today.

When asked about the Media Council Bill, Committee Chair Parshuram Meghi Gurung said, “Since Media Council is a regulatory body, it will oversee whether there are any violations of code of conduct while disseminating news, not the issue of punishment.”

“Hence, the provision related to punishment has been dislodged from the Media Council Bill,” said Gurung.
