Cabinet decides to resume rescue flights

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to resume rescue flights to bring back Nepalis stranded abroad.

A Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Thursday decided to bring Nepalis marooned abroad through three charter flights on a daily basis, said a minister.

The minister said that even though the passengers from abroad bring COVID-19 negative report, it was decided to quarantine them for seven days.

Similarly, it has been decided that the citizens who come home through land routes from 10 checkpoints specified by the government have to stay in the hotels at the same checkpoints for seven days, said a source.

The rescue flights were suspended on Monday after the COVID-19 Crisis Management Center (CCMC) wrote a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation asking it to stop the rescue operation.

The meeting also decided to allow trucks carrying raw materials to operate in the Kathmandu Valley while a prohibitory order has been clamped.

Similarly, the meeting also decided to give continuation to the previous decision of the Council of Ministers to issue a prohibitory order through the District Administration Office in areas with a high number of coronavirus cases.
