KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issues an interim order to the government to not remove the incumbent Acting Chairperson of Nepal Press Council.

The SC’s order has come in response to a writ petition file at the apex court by the Press Council Board on Monday protesting the government’s decision to appoint Durga Bhandari as its Acting Chairperson.

SC Judge Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada issued the interim order to the government in this regard.

It should be noted a Cabinet meeting had decided to appoint Durga Bhandari as the acting chairperson of the Press Council in place of the incumbent Acting Chairperson Kishor Shrestha, whose term is expiring on September 28.

It may be noted that the Press Council Act has given the responsibility of selecting the acting chairman to the Press Council Board.

Advocate Bhandari, who was appointed as a member of the Press Council by the ministerial decision was hastily given the responsibility of acting chairperson of the Press Council on Monday night.

According to the Press Council Act, the Press Council Board has the right to choose the person to chair the meeting in the absence of a chairperson.
