1,700 years old Buddha statue destroyed in Pakistan



LAHORE: Police have arrested four men for shattering an ancient Buddha statue found during construction work in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan.

Videos have surfaced on social media showing a man breaking with a hammer an approximately 1,700 years old life-sized statue of Buddha, parts of which were still embedded underground.

Other men can be seen looking on as the statue is being destroyed while a couple of people were making videos.

The statue was discovered in Mardan’s Takht Bhai area, which was a part of the Gandhara civilization, while the workers were digging to lay the foundation for the under-construction house.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against them under the Antiquities Act 2016, according to officials, media reports said.
