Press Council Board moves SC against Bhandari’s appointment



KATHMANDU: The Press Council Board has file a writ petition at the Supreme Court (SC) protesting the government’s decision to appoint Durga Bhandari as its Acting Chairperson.

The writ petition hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday.

A Cabinet meeting on Monday night had decided to appoint Durga Bhandari as the acting chairperson of the Press Council.

Meanwhile, the Press Council Act has given the responsibility of selecting the acting chairman to the council board.

Advocate Bhandari, who was appointed as a member of the Press Council by the ministerial decision on Sunday, was hastily given the responsibility of acting chairperson of the Press Council on Monday night.

According to the Press Council Act, the Press Council Board has the right to choose the person to chair the meeting in the absence of a chairperson.

Kishor Shrestha, acting chairman of the Press Council Nepal has only 40 days left for his term. Council members Khil Bahadur Bhandari and Shrestha’s four-year term ends on September 28.
