Fact Check: Did Malla die in the hospital or his apartment in the US?

KATHMANDU: The death of Pawan Kumar Malla, 44, a former assistant sub-inspector of Nepal Police, in New York on Wednesday have raised several questions.

Did he die of a novel coronavirus in the hospital as claimed by his relatives or did he die in his apartment? Most importantly, reports had also come to the fore alleging a hospital for not admitting him for treatment.

His friends, staying in the same apartment, posted on their Facebook pages informing that Malla was admitted to a hospital while urging his relatives to contact them.

However, some of Malla’s relatives said he did not go to the hospital thinking that it was not so severe. While some said he did in the hospital itself.

According to one Vijay Gyawali, one of his friends, they initially did not want to inform Malla’s relatives about his death considering the consequences. Therefore, they posted on social media that Malla was undergoing in the hospital.

According to Gyawali, they had called an ambulance some three weeks ago when Malla got ill. The medics in the ambulance checked Malla’s temperature, and blood pressure, and did not take him to the hospital claiming that his condition was not serious.

The next day Malla went to the hospital. However, the hospital did not admit him suggesting that he would rather be safe at home.

Malla, a taxi driver, took rest at home. However, after a few days, he visited the hospital again to be sent back home. Even though Malla’s friends called an ambulance for the second time, he was suggested to remain at home by the ambulance medics.

The next day on Wednesday, Mall breathed his last in his apartment. In fact, Malla had pneumonia when he was a child due to which his condition became critical.
