KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has summoned a meeting of the Constitutional Council the day after he agreed to withdraw the newly-introduced ordinance.

Prime Minister Oli had on Wednesday agreed to withdraw the ordinance. A Standing Committee of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had also decided to repeal the ordinance.

Leader of the Opposition Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has been called for a meeting at 5 pm, according to a source close to him.

However, sources close to Deuba said that he will not attend the meeting.

The Constitutional Council chaired by Prime Minister consists of the Speaker, Chairperson of the National Assembly, Chief Justice, Leader of the Opposition, and the Deputy Speaker as members. The council makes recommendations for the appointment of officials to various constitutional bodies.

Meanwhile, Oli has convened a Cabinet meeting at 6 pm.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Parbat Gurung said that the ministry-wise agenda would be discussed at a meeting to be held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar.

It is said that discussions will be held revoking an ordinance related to the Constitutional Council brought by the government after it courted controversy.
